Let it Grow

Design a smart watering reminder app that fosters a community for plant enthusiasts.

PROJECT DETAILS

This self-initiated project aimed to create an app that provides smart watering reminders and fosters a community for plant enthusiasts. With over 30 plants in a small garden, Hilly identified the need for a digital solution to manage watering schedules. The project targeted green lovers and city dwellers who are too busy to manage their plants and need additional resources and knowledge to sustain plant growth.

SOLUTION

User research was conducted with plant lovers and keepers aged 20-40 to gather insights into their habits, preferences, and needs. These insights were used to identify problems and draft personas.

The app offers more than just watering reminders; it aims to spark interest in planting by:

  • Identifying plants and providing reliable planting tips.
  • Monitoring daily plant growth.
  • Offering a shopping platform with product recommendations for plant growers.
  • Creating a community for troubleshooting and support.
  • Providing personalised notifications and plant naming features.

DELIVERABLES

Hilly worked on the mobile app interface and prototyping, focusing on user-friendly design and functionality.

Key Features of the app:

  • Explore: Plant identifier and reliable planting tips.
  • Gardening: Monitoring daily plant growth.
  • Shop: All-in-one platform with product recommendations.
  • Community: Troubleshooting support and experience sharing.
  • Personalisation: Custom notifications and plant naming.

CHALLENGES
  • Gardening Expertise: Accurate and relevant knowledge is essential for the app’s success. Reliable resources, preferably first-hand from plant experts, are needed to cover the regional species included in the app’s database.
  • Market Positioning: Competing with other social media platforms requires careful analysis and strategic positioning. The app needs to provide unique value by connecting the planting community and offering a platform for users to share their experiences.
